This excellent exhibition at Warwick Castle, free once your in the
castle, is well worth and hour of your time. It is based around a visit
by the Prince of Wales to Warwick castle in 1898. In Victorian times the
castle attracted high society to the regular parties which were held
there. The exhibit gives you a real feel for how the top Brits lived
in late Victorian times. In one word, "extravagantly"! |
The whole setting is unbelievably, but truly, opulent. From the gentlemen's
smoking room to the ladies boudoir, the attention to true authentic detail
stands out. The rooms have been recreated to be as similar to the original as
possible.
Take the time to read the descriptions (small multi-lingual plaques) of the
rooms and you will be fascinated by the picture of Victorian life they paint.
A 20 year old Winston Churchill is at the party as well as the Francis Greville,
Earl of Warwick. Not forgotten are the various servants which would remain
behind the scenes at a society party like this. Pity them when you see how much
work is involved in simply filling a bath with hot water!
Below are pictures of some of the sets you will see.
 |
The Royal Weekend Party exhibit is open all day and there is
no additional entrance charge. You are free to take photos of
any of the sets.
The only downside to this exhibit is if you go in at the same
time as a guided tour. All of the tour will enter each of the
rooms and fill them up completely! Then again, if you pretend to
be part of the tour, the information gained is well worth it. |
