In 1066 William the Conqueror invaded and conquered England. This process initially didn't cover all of England though. By 1068 he had reached the Midlands.

On the top of the mound

As part of the fortification process he ordered the building of the Mound in 1068. Its position and height gave it views all around of any approaching invaders.

As various other parts of the castle were constructed the Mound fell into disuse and by the 1600s it became part of the castle's gardens. On the left is a view of the very top of the mound. On the right is a picture of the spectacular view from the top of the Mound. It's worth a trip to the top just for the views.
