The food and drink in the castle grounds is OK but we explore the
better options just outside. |
|
Food at Warwick Castle is similar to many large tourist attractions,
adequate, but only just adequate. You will also be paying a price for
the privilege of eating in the castle grounds. But take a three minute
walk outside the castle and a whole new set of exciting food and drink
options is on your doorstep. Take a 10 minute stroll and you will the
walk past some of the most interesting parts of Warwick and have great
food and drink at much cheaper prices. we tell you how. |
HOW TO EXIT THE CASTLE ON FOOT
There's no need to take your car out of the car park, food and drink is available
two minutes walk from the castle. Exit the castle through the
ticket barriers (get your hand stamped for re-entry) and
continue for 30 seconds. On your right you will see the path
lead you to the right and in front of you will be the pedestrian
exit. See the picture on the right.Exit the gate, turn
left and you will be in Castle Street. |
 |
 |
Walk for a minute up Castle Street and you will come
across the Oken House Tearooms. This cafe serves excellent food,
not the best in Warwick but excellent all the same. The position
of the cafe and its exterior is the best of the lot. Set in a
small quaint street, this Tudor building has been restored to
its former beautiful glory. It was the house of a Thomas Oken
who was one Warwick's great benefactors.
to go to the tearooms website for the menu and more details.
Even in high season you will get a seat, often outside. |
|
 |
Continue up Castle Street for another minute and you will pass
two more modern eating places. Prezzo (left picture) is a modern
Italian restaurant with main meal prices around £8.
for their website. Another modern restaurant in Castle Street
is Keep with an unusual menu. The prices are around £7 for a
meal.

restaurant. |

 |
If you continue up Castle Street for another 30 seconds you
can either go right into Jury Street or left into High Street.
Ahead of you up Church Street is St Mary's Church. Turn left
and after 30 seconds you will see Trios sandwich bar (left
picture) on the other side of the road. A fresh sandwich shop at
cheap prices. Continue a bit further down and you will pass
Catalans on your side of the street, an excellent tapas bar.

At the top of Castle Street if you turn left rather than right
as above, then you are in for a treat. Continue down High Street
for a minute or two and on the other side of the road you will
see the stunning Lord Leycester Hospital. Not a hospital at all
but a home for retired service men. That's how it has been for
hundreds of years.
Click here for more history about this stunning building
which escaped the Great Fire of Warwick by a cat's whisker.
You need to pay to enter the building and grounds but you can
enter the adjoining cafe for free. It's a trip back into the
past and offers wholesome English food at reasonable prices. |
 |
The above eating places are just a few you will find outside the
castle. But our top recommendation is a 10 minute leisurely
stroll to the Tudor House Inn. You walk out of the castle and up
Castle Street as before. Turn left down High Street, cross to
the other side of the road for the best views. Marvel at the
Lord Leycester Hospital as you walk past it. |
 |
 |
Opposite the Lord Leycester Hospital see the Friends Meeting
House (picture right) where the Great Fire of Warwick started.
See the old timber framed building, which survived the fire,
next to the more modern buildings. Go under Westgate (left)
which has a chapel above the gate.
Continue down the road (now West Street) taking in the old
houses on the other side of the road. Soon you will reach the
Tudor House Inn on your side of the road. |
 |
This is a free house inn which was previously owned by Greene King.
For the last six years it has been in private ownership. The Inn dates
back to 1472 and has been lovingly restored. lots of oak beams, suits of
armour, a stunning original fireplace and lots more. The bar food is
basic with excellent ingredients. A typical bar meal will set you back
£4 to £5, superb value. We review the Tudor House Inn in detail on our
cooking site,
