Entrance to the dungeons at Warwick Castle

The dungeons at Warwick Castle are extremely dark so no pictures of the interior in this article. They can be found at the base of Caesar's Tower and there is only one opening, for the entrance and exit.

Take care when you descend the stairs, the ceiling is extremely low especially for taller people.

If you were a prisoner in the dungeons, conditions would be appalling. The only source of light is is a small cutting high up on the walls. The only drainage is a single gulley across the floor. If you misbehaved, conditions could be made even worse. A pulley would lower you down into a tiny compartment and you would effectively be in solitary confinement.

There is a haunting message carved out over many months into one of the walls. It reads "Master John Smyth Guner to His Majestye Highness was a prisoner in this place and lay here from 1642 till the ....". Commiserations to Master John Smyth!
