The focus of St John's Cathedral is the
altar and this is where you eyes first focus (see the
picture on the left).
Then you will begin to see the beautiful
wall and ceiling decorations. Each time a Knight of St John
was appointed to a new position it was customary the he give
a gift to St John's Cathedral. The result is the interior of
the cathedral as it now is, decked out with art of all
kinds. |

Probably most famous of all the works of art in the
cathedral is the picture of the be-heading of St
John by Caravaggio. It's worth studying this picture
for a few minutes. Notice the look of horror on the
woman's face, the dagger drawn by the executioner to
finish off the job the sword could not do. The faces
peering in at the scene ...
The floor of the
Cathedral is covered in the gravestones of past
Knights (see right). Their fascination with war and
death is clear to see on the gravestones. |

The Cathedral is open from Monday to Friday
(9.30 to 4)and on Saturday (from 9.30 to 12). It is
not open on Sundays or Bank Holidays for tourists.
The entrance fee is low especially considering the
treasure trove of art within. Work on building the
Cathedral began in 1573 with the main construction
finishing in 1578. Various other parts of the church
were added over time with full structure being
completed in 1736. |
