Siggiewi is in the South West of Malta
and is worth a visit. It is a traditional and unspoilt
Maltese village with lots of traditional houses. Wander
around the side streets and appreciate the old world charm
of this parish village which dates back to 1436.
At the centre of the village is a huge
square where the locals gather. The parish church of St
Nicholas (see left hand picture) is out of proportion to the
size of the village which has a population of just over
6,000 inhabitants. The church was designed by Lorenzo Gaffa
and dates back to 1693. |

If you walk to the rear of the bus terminus you will
see the chapel of St John the Baptist. It's a run of
the mill chapel by Maltese standards, but the
central picture over the altar shows a gruesome
picture of the beheading of St John. Click the
picture on the right for an enlarged view. Much of
the time the chapel is closed but the residents of
the village have kindly provided a strategically
positioned window to allow you to view the picture
from outside. |
