Distance view of St Paul's Cathedral, Mdina, Malta

Many of the buildings in Malta were destroyed by an earthquake in 1693. Certainly the simple building which stood on the site of St Paul's was badly damaged. The architect was Lorenzo Gafa and he understood that not only would St Paul's be seen close up but it's elevated position would enable it to be seen from far away.

The front of the Cathedral has two clocks on it with the right hand clock telling the correct time. The second clock is said to be there to confuse the devil. Look closely though and gives the month and date of the year.

The second clock of St Paul's Cathedral in Malta.

Work started on building the Cathedral in 1697 and it was finished in an astonishingly short five years. The exterior is impressive yet the interior is even more stunning. Simply wander round to take in the beauty of the paintings, and sculptures. A small guide leaflet available at the entrance will identify the main points of interest.
