Malta is an island which has been subjected to many
different cultures all of which have left their mark. Between
1090 and 1530 the Germans, French and Spanish all occupied
Malta. Then from 1530 to 1798 the Knights of St John reigned
supreme in Malta. Many of their fortifications remain to
this day.
In 1798 the Knights rule ended with almost not a shot
fired and they capitulated to Napoleon. He fully understood
the geographic importance of Malta and is quoted as saying
"I would rather see the British on the heights of Monmartre
rather than in Malta". A rather unfortunate statement
because from 1800 to 1964 Malta remained under British
control! |

Nowadays, Malta offers the visitor the
best that Europe has to offer. From the even and warm
temperatures either side of July to August, to the stunning
views from the fortifications at Mdina,
Malta has it all.
Sandy beaches are not Malta's strong point
but the beach at Mellieha Bay
is a long stretch of golden sand leading down to a very
gently sloping sea. Ideal swimming for children and adults.
Visit this top class beach outside of July and August, and
you will have the pick of the deck chairs and views. |

If you hire a car (extremely cheap on
Malta) or make use of the excellent Maltese busses then
truly historical sites and spectacular views are within an
hour away. Valletta, the capital
of Malta, is a "must see" site, as are
Mdina,
Marsaxlokk and the various
gardens scattered around the island.
The smaller nearby island of
Gozo is a twenty five
minute ferry ride away and well worth a visit. It boasts a
superb red sandy beach at Ramla, the
stunning citadel in Victoria,
the Azure Window and lots more.
