This page on the plant life of Malta is not an expert horticultural work. Rather it highlights some of the more beautiful and unusual plants that can be found by the amateur gardener on a tourist trip to Malta.

To the left and right is the bougainvillea in full flower. In Malta they don't appear to be growing wild, although they are cultivated by amateur gardeners to great effect. The picture on the right shows a Bougainvillea which has been grown as a standard. Click here for a site that all you ever wanted to know about the Bougainvillea.

Bouganvillia

Various forms of cactus are common in Malta because of the year round warmth, lack of rain and sandy soil. If you visit Malta in May or June you will be lucky enough to see these cacti in flower. click the picture on the right to see a larger version of this cactus flower. Even the prickly cactus is beautiful at this time of year.

On the left is an oddity that we saw. Click the picture to enlarge it and you will snails grouped around the leaves in the cactus. Presumably this is some way for them to extract water from the plant but I can't guarantee that.

Cape daisy

Two smaller plants that are frequently found in Maltese gardens. We are reasonably sure that the picture on the left is of a Cape Daisy. For more information on Cape Daisies, click here.

On the right is a picture of Cytisus (Broom) which thrives in Maltese weather and soil conditions.

Fennel growing wild in Malta

On the left is the herb fennel which grows wild by the roadside all over Malta.
First right is the common geranium which grows well in Maltese gardens. The flower colour appeared more deep than usual.
Finally a mystery flower on the far right. The flower is definitely exotic, but we were unable to identify it.

The tree, it's fruit and the bark are found growing in many places in Malta. In some case it's cultivated but in others it is growing wild.

Click any of the three pictures to see this unusual tree in more detail.

Close up of the nerium oleander flower The three picture in this row are of nerium oleander. These are native to Malta and other areas of the Mediterranean.

The flowers are beautiful and appear in May and June growing wild all over Malta. Click the pictures to see them more closely.

Click any of the above four pictures for a close up view. We were very surprised to see roses growing successfully (second picture along) in Malta. This wasn't a rarity, they were growing in many of the gardens we visited.
