All metro stations in Madrid are sign-posted in the streets by the Metro sign shown on the left. The metro opening hours are between 6 am to 1.30 am every day. Buses run parallel to the major metro routes when the metro is closed, see busses below for more details.
METRO TICKETS AND PRICES

There are 6 separate zones of the Madrid Metro but as a tourist you are likely to need only one, zone A (or Metro Madrid). The other five zones are detailed below.

TFM This zone is between Rivas Vaciamadrid and Arganda del Rey which covers parts of zones B1, B2 and B3.

MetroSur This zone covers the towns Alcorcón, Fuenlabrada, Getafe, Legánes and Móstoles. These cover parts of zones B1 and B2. Also included are the metro stations Joaquín Vilumbrales and Puerta del Sur both on line 10.

MetroNorte The stations from La Granja to Hospital del Norte on line 10.

MetroEste The stations from Barrio del Puerto to Hospital del Henares on line 7.

ML1 Lines of the Metro Ligero which are in zone A.

In zone A the prices are simple, €1 for a single journey anywhere in zone A. If you are in Madrid for a couple of days, go for the Metrobus ticket. This is effectively 10 single tickets anywhere in on the metro or busses in zone A. It costs €6.40 and can be bought at almost all metro stations.

Simply place your ticket into one the ticket machines at an entrance gate. Tickets are not normally checked bys station staff but if you are  caught travelling without a ticket, the penalties are high.

BUSES IN MADRID
Travel by bus in Madrid takes longer than by the Metro. Also, in common with all major cities, the routes are complicated for the tourist to understand. If you plan to make a journey more then once or twice and want to find out if the bus is a sensible option then ask at your hotel or consult the Transport System in Madrid website.

Night buses in Madrid however are much easier to understand and they run when the metro is asleep. They follow the routes of the metro lines in the centre of Madrid, L1 to L11. Simply look for the nearest bus stop to any Metro station and that's where the buses, known as Metro Buho, will stop. These buses run between 12.45am to 5.45am very 20 minutes or so.

As well as the Medtro Buho buses, 24 other bus routes operate at night. These all start from Plaza de Cibeles and run out into the suburbs of Madrid.
