Amsterdam has its fair share of museums and exhibitions as befits a capital city. It's unlikely as a tourist that you'll have time to visit them all so you need to make an informed choice as to which is best for you.

The Van Gogh Museum will give you a large dose of culture, featuring one of the best artists that ever lived. It comes at a cost though. Long queues if you don't book in advance and crowds of tourists to accompany you as you make your way round.

The Rijksmuseum is more balanced with a variety of Dutch and other artists work on display. It also has many other works of art to interest most visitors. This is Amsterdam's premier museum and is visited by tourists and locals alike.

The Heineken Experience is a blatant advert for Holland's most famous lager. At the same time it is highly enjoyable, great fun and comes with two glasses of Heineken included. The choice is yours and we also review a couple of lesser known attractions.

Below we list some of the more popular museums and exhibitions in Amsterdam. Just click on any of them to go to an individual write up with lots of pictures and videos to decide which is best for you.

Van Gogh Museum - one of the premier tourist attractions in Amsterdam. But beware the entrance queues and the tourist crowded interior.

Rijksmuseum -

Heineken Experience - a light-hearted but still informative exhibition of the Heineken Brewery and its history.

Tropenmuseum - a highly entertaining museum for adults and kids which depicts life in the tropics and subtropiscs throughout time. Highly recommended.

Begijnhof - not so much a museum as a statement of Amsterdam's religious history. Dating back to 1346 this has tonear the top of Amsterdam's tourist attractions.
